NÓS

Background

Nós is an Irish language culture and lifestyle magazine. The Irish only magazine is a popular website that first formed in 2008.

There are a number of Irish speakers within Wibble, and we were approached for the full web design and web development rebuild of this Irish website.

FYI Nós means “custom” or “trend”.

The Problem

The previous web site was using a bought theme and was lacking in usability and modern web design and web development techniques. The layouts were bland aesthetically, with poor interaction and high bounce rates for users.

Page speed was not acceptable, and it lacked in basic technical SEO, which had a detrimental effect on its search engine results.

The previous version of the website was launched a number of years ago, and aesthetically it was really starting to show its age. The client wanted a new direction in design, coupled with easier content management, and that’s why they went to Wibble as web design and development is our forte.

what we did

We really did every possible change you could carry out on a web design and development project. Not one single feature or line of code from the previous website was re-used in this new build. Our design team went through a full content mapping and information architecture project to ensure correct usability and accessibility.

We worked on aesthetically strong visuals that tied inextricably to the brand refresh that was being carried out concurrently with our web design project.

Our web development team built a custom WordPress theme utilising native Gutenberg blocks. We did not utilise a page builder like Elementor or Visual Composer as we wanted finite control over items like accessibility and PageSpeed. In our experience, these elements are harder to control when using generic page builders.

We migrated the site’s DNS to Cloudflare to help with security and to utilise the CDN, and we moved hosting from generic shared hosting to dedicated Wibble web hosting services. We moved the site onto the Wibble Support Package to help with future uptime monitoring, WordPress updates, security, patches and backups. This is our default position with any new sites that we are in charge of. It isn’t just about hosting; it’s a full suite of services that we wrap these sites in.

The results

The new website is unrecognisable from the previous version as we carried out a complete rework of the entire site.

We created a fast-to-load website that passes all Core Web Vitals on both mobile and desktop. The site now is easier to use, with better tagging, categorization, and organisation of content.

We have put features in place to reduce bounce rate and increase the readability of the entire site. The focus on usability and encouraging the return of users was paramount in this web design project.
